Higher education in Pakistan expanded in 1947, following the independence of the country. Higher Education Commission (HEC) looks after the education system. HEC oversees funding, research outputs, and teaching quality. The commission recognizes 174 universities in the country.
The national language is Urdu. But you don’t need to worry about learning Urdu. As all teaching at universities in Pakistan conducts in English.
There are a total of 10 top universities in Pakistan featured in the QS University Ranking Asia 2016. 6 Pakistani universities are a feature in the QS World University Rankings in 2016/17. These are:

2. Quaid-i-Azam University

  • Formerly known as Islamabad University but renamed in honor of Muhammad Ali Jinnah. Quaid-i-Azam University ranks 701 in the world. It is one of the top universities in Pakistan. 
  • The university is built-in 1967. It has recently collaborated with various international institutes. Recently it collaborates with the United Nations and the University of Tokyo.

  • Founded in 1984, Lahore University of Management Sciences is a private research university. It is the country’s highest-ranked university. In the Asia rankings, at 111th (up from 160-170 in the previous year).
  • It is one of the most selective universities in Pakistan. It is also relatively small, with around 3,500 students taught by 200 faculty members.

  • The University of Engineering and Technology located in the northern part of Lahore. It is on the historical “Grand Trunk Road (G.T. Road)”. Near the magnificent Shalimar Gardens built during the great Mughal Empire.
  • The institution started its career in 1921 as the ‘ Mughalpura Technical College ’. Later it became the ‘Maclagan Engineering College’. A name was given to it in 1923 when Sir Edwards Maclagan, the then Governor of Punjab who laid the foundation stone.
At that stage, the institution offered courses of study in only two disciplines:
  • Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

The UHS Lahore has a thriving campus. It is recognized internationally as a student-centered, 71-colleges research university.

The University of Sindh is a public research institution.
The university is in Jamshoro residential district, Sindh, Pakistan. It is one of Pakistan’s oldest Universities.

The university was set in Karachi in 1947 and got shifted to Hyderabad. The institution continued to act as a full-fledged institution of instruction. There are four law schools and various other colleges affiliated with it. The university is famous for literature, natural sciences, philosophy, and Sindh studies.
The university is now a member of the UK’s Commonwealth Universities Association.

9. National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences Islamabad

The National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences is a private research institution. It is one of Pakistan’s leading academic institutions.

10.Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS)

The PIEAS Islamabad is one of Pakistan’s most prestigious universities.
It offers BS, MS, and Ph.D. programs in chemistry, physics, and life sciences.
Approximately 55 percent of PIEAS students undertake postgraduate studies. There is a splendid amount of fellowships available for postgraduate students. PIEAS has the largest proportion of Ph.D.’s in its full-time professors. In comparison to other universities in Pakistan.
PIEAS has outstanding research and development equipment for both scientific and analytical use.
It is one of Pakistan’s most research-intensive Universities.

PIEAS has not issued its per-semester payments. A maximum amount and varies with the number of credit hours (1900 / credit hour). The one-time entry fee is Rs.8,500.
